Dog Tricks to Prevent Reactivity – April 2 @ 2 pm (PST)
Presented by Dr. Ian Dunbar
1-hour seminar (45-minute presentation followed by 15-minute Q+A)
Dog Tricks are a wonderfully fun and motivating way to improve your dog’s behavior, but there’s one reason for teaching tricks that is particularly underappreciated. Teaching your dog tricks is one of the best way to make your dog appear non-threatening to other people and their dogs. When you teach your dog to bow or stand on their hind legs or rollover, you are teaching them skills that you will be able to use to defuse tension and resolve reactivity.
These skills are going to be particularly important in the coming weeks and months, as many dogs are getting much less experience socializing with other dogs and people while much of the world is dealing with social isolation protocols. Taking the time to teach your dog some good tricks now is a wonderful way to spend time at home with your dog. It’s fun, it will increase your off-leash control, and it will help prepare your dog for when they start going out into the world again, at which point they, and many other dogs, are likely to be a little on edge and out of practice when it comes to socialization and confidence.
